Description of The Craft of Tea 1660-2024

The Craft of Tea 1660-2024 is published to coincide with the exhibition of the same name held at the Goldsmiths' Centre from the 1st May - 27 June 2024, developed in partnership with the Chitra Collection.

This catalogue presents extraordinary teawares from the Chitra Collection alongside modern and contemporary examples, to explore the material history of tea, stylistically and thematically, from 1660 to the present day.

For centuries, tea has inspired a rich material culture characterised by skilled and innovative craftsmanship. The expertise of makers throughout the ages is demonstrated by the teawares explored in the catalogue. By the way of eight themes, you are taken on a journey from the beginnings of tea trade in Europe, through tea taking as ritual, power and rebellion, to the boundary pushing teapots of the modern and contemporary period.

The more than sixty pieces illustrated in colour are global in scope, whilst also questioning the preoccupations of UK silversmiths today. Amongst the historical examples in each section, you’ll find a contemporary counterpart that responds to or extends the ideas under consideration.

The catalogue also features two essays, by Evelyn Earl and John Andrew, and an interview with silversmith Chris Knight.

Whatever your interest – visual, historical, or practical – we hope that you will enjoy this celebration of the craft of making tea.

Edited by Charlotte Dew, Evelyn Earl, Grace Fannon and Gregory Parsons.
