To further her knowledge of jewellery making, she went on to study at London Metropolitan University where she received the Goldsmith of the Year Award. In 2020, Shirani started her business Shirani Jewellery, mainly working from her home workshop. In 2024, she won a GC&DC Award and the Modern Maker Award, amongst others. The Light & Shadows Collection brings together window panel designs from Sri Lanka, and architectural aesthetics and sculptural forms from buildings and bridges. Shadows cast from the decorative cut-out patterns on wooden window panels, metal grills and gates, form the inspiration behind the collection. She brings her jewellery designs to life using repetitive patterns and references to the interplay of light and shadow. A shadow effect is created through a combination of polished and oxidised silver, and gold-plating. Each piece is made using recycled silver and ethically sourced gemstones. Bringing together the beautiful window panel designs of eastern and western architecture, Shirani creates wearable art and statement jewellery, alongside items suitable for everyday wear.
