Jade Mellor

Jade Mellor

Jade Mellor grew up surrounded by tools and antiques as part of a family of makers in rural Cheshire. Inspired by the creativity around her, she pursued a degree in 3D Design from the Manchester School of Art. A back injury forced her to develop experimental resin processes away from a traditional bench, all fuelled by research into geology and archaeology collections in museums. To incorporate more precious and durable materials, Jade re-trained in metal jewellery-making skills in 2019. Drawing on her experience of working with clients at Gill Wing Jewellery – and what she loves to wear herself – she creates pieces made with the wearer’s personal style and comfort in mind. Jade has shown work at Collect Art Fair and has been presented on Dezeen, Stylebubble and in print publications including Vogue UK. In 2024, Jade’s gold and ruby ring featured in Vanity Fair’s jewellery special’s 'Top 10 Masterpieces'.

Jade’s jewellery is made to protect and adorn, drawing symbolic strength from the dramatic elements of the natural world. Raw yet refined, her textures evoke the transformations of fossils and mineral structures and the powerful landscapes of Icelandic basalt beaches. The bold, hand-sculpted designs of her Caddis collection are hand built piece by piece in rhythmic patterns similar to ancient mosaics. Her organic building method is inspired by the tiny, armoured cases of the caddisfly, a fascinating creature known as ‘nature’s architect’ found in our ponds and streams. Jade researched caddisfly specimens in London’s Natural History Museum before translating them into wax and casting in bronze, recycled gold and silver. She embellishes her creations with responsibly sourced precious gems and unusual stones that she has chosen for their intrigue, rather than their perfection, to remind us of the wonders we discover when we connect with our world.
