Emma Lawrence

Emma Lawrence works from her home studio in Walthamstow, London. She studied Anthropology at University College London then undertook a master's degree to train as a librarian. After having children, she retrained as a primary school teacher and decided she needed a hobby. Remembering her delight in discovering various bead shops as a teenager she took up beading. Emma learnt by trying, failing and trying again, to recreate projects found in books by accomplished bead artists. Wanting to push her jewellery making further she went on to study traditional silversmithing techniques to develop the technical abilities that enable pursuit of her imagination. Jewellery making has also connected Emma to her degree in anthropology with its wider understanding of adornment. Wanting to share and express her joy of making she founded the brand Spangle Fandango in 2022, was selected to take part in the Getting Started Spotlighting programme at the Goldsmiths’ Centre and has exhibited with At Work Gallery and FORGE in London.

Inspired by a love of colour and beads the Points of Light Collection celebrates the beauty of bead-weaving. Chosen for their versatility and as a more sustainable way to incorporate colour into jewellery, tiny glass beads offer Emma Lawrence exciting possibilities. Starting from her fascination for contemporary geometric bead-weaving, she takes these tiny beads and makes geometric beaded shapes which are incorporated into fine jewellery. The collection has evolved by experimenting with casting techniques to capture the intricacies of the bead-weaving in precious metal, and thus elevate and enhance the beadwork. Silver tubing is used to exaggerate some geometric shapes, whilst placing the delicate beadwork centre stage. Points of Light combines bold colour combinations with strong structures and intricate beaded details.  The collection is intended to uplift and bring joy.
