Description of Flat Hammering with Christopher Lawrence

The art of making a tray is one of the most technically challenging and rewarding skills for a silversmith to master. Using processes such as sinking, flat hammering and setting, this type of working requires a fundamental understanding of the nature of precious metals. In this Masterclass film, Christopher Lawrence, whose career spans over 50 years, demonstrates the techniques involved in producing a sterling silver oval tray.

This training film is one of a series, designed for use by students, apprentices and those interested in jewellery, silversmithing and the allied crafts, and provides an introduction to the techniques involved in flat hammering.
