Description of The Culture of Cutlery

Available for pre-order: Copies will be dispatched by post or available to collect from the Goldsmiths' Centre on the 23rd April 2026.

The Culture of Cutlery is published to coincide with the exhibition of the same name to be held at the Goldsmiths' Centre from the 22nd April to the 24th June 2026.

This catalogue explores examples of European cutlery dating from 1425 to the present day, celebrating the extraordinary diversity of these forms. Drawing from the collections of the London Cutlers’ Company and Goldsmiths’ Company, and a range of modern and contemporary makers and businesses, it highlights the materials, techniques and cultural shifts that have shaped the design and evolution of the knife, fork and spoon.

It features the following contributions:

  • Cutlery on the Move, Rachel Church
  • Cutlery and Flatware: Shaping by hand, the move to mechanisation and mass production, Emma Paragreen
  • Cutlery Advertising: A pictorial history, Erin Sleeper
  • Old Dogs and New Tricks: The Cutlers’ Company Contemporary Cutlery Design Competition, Dr Frances Parton
  • Spoons and Symbols: A conversation with Simone ten Hompel with Charlotte Dew and Gregory Parsons Edited by Jane Audas
  • Cutlery as Still Life, Charlotte Dew
  • A Selected Bibliography, The Goldsmiths' Company Library and Archive
